Senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Dowingtown) propelled the Syracuse field hockey team to its fifth-straight win with a career-high three goals against Fairfield Monday afternoon. The Orangewomen defeated the Stags, 5-0 on the road, to mark the third time in four games that SU has tallied five goals to beat an opponent.
For Aronowicz, it moved her into the team lead for scoring (17 points, six goals) and raised her to eighth place on the school's all-time scoring list (71 points), two points ahead of Amy Weller (1994-98).
Syracuse (7-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) took a 2-0 lead in the first half with unassisted goals by the team's high-scoring sisters, Michelle and Kristin Aronowicz. Michelle wasted little time notching her second goal of the game just 3:17 into the second half. She gave the Orangewomen a 4-0 lead when she converted a pass from junior midfielder Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) with 26:15 remaining in the period. Freshman midfielder Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) capped off the scoring with her second goal of the season at the 17:36 mark.
Junior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) played the first 62:10 of the contest and finished with four saves. She was replaced by sophomore goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) who played the final 7:50 and finished with the first five saves of her career. This was the second appearance for Wagner in a game for the Orange. She also saw minutes against Colgate on Sept. 27.
In related hockey news released on Monday, Michelle Aronowicz was named the BIG EAST co-Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Colgate game (one goal, three assists).
The Orangewomen return home to play Massachusetts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
