Lombard's Two Goals Give Field Hockey its Sixth-Straight Win

Freshman sweeper Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) scored on a direct-penalty corner shot with no time left on the clock as No. 19-ranked Syracuse came back to defeat Massachusetts, 2-1, at Coyne Field. It marked SU's sixth-straight win and the first time since 1997 that the Orangewomen have won eight of their first 10 games.
Trailing UMass, 1-0, with 12:38 remaining in the game, SU head coach Kathleen Parker brought Lombard up to the top of the circle to use the rookie's strong hit as a shot on goal. Senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) and red-shirt freshman forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) did their parts in getting the ball out and setting up the shot for Lombard. The freshman sweeper tied the game at 1-1 with a slightly lifted, but powerful shot that sailed past Massachusetts goalie Ashley Egland. It was Lombard's first career goal.
With time winding down, Massachusetts (3-6) had several chances to notch the game-winner, including shots by Erika Whiston and Heather Kenney. Fortunately, Syracuse's All-American goalie Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) came up with three key saves down the stretch.
The game-winning goal was set up by Michelle Aronowicz, who forced a penalty corner with 10 seconds left in the contest. The clock ran down to 0:00 before Aronowicz pushed the ball out to Guglieri who stopped it for Lombard's second blast of the day.
Stacey Blue scored on a rebound with 5:55 remaining in the first half to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead which they held until Lombard's first tally in the second period.
Junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) had an opportunity to tie the game with a penalty stroke at the 28:29 mark of the second half, but her shot ricocheted off the left post.
The Orangewomen have a big week ahead. They put their 8-2 record to the test against Cornell on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. on Coyne Field. Their BIG EAST showdown against Villanova, the only other unbeaten team in the league, is Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. also at Coyne Field.
