Junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) scored on a penalty stroke with 5:35 remaining in the first overtime to help the No. 19-ranked Syracuse field hockey team to a 3-2 win against Cornell at Coyne Field. Aronowicz, who scored all three goals for the Orangewomen, led her team to its seventh consecutive victory.
Aronowicz netted her first goal of the game at the 17:06 mark of the first half on a penalty corner. Her sister, Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) and sophomore forward Emily Smith (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) assisted on the play.
Cornell's speedy forward Carissa Mirasol tied the game at 1-1 with a breakaway goal at the 10:09 mark of the first period. SU freshman sweeper Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) fumbled the ball inside her own 50-yard line. Mirasol was there to steal it away and then put a nice dodge on Orange goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), who came out to challenge.
The Big Red took a 2-1 lead with 5:56 remaining in the opening half when Mirasol notched her second tally of the night.
In the second half, the Orangewomen outcornered Cornell, 6-1. With 24:08 remaining in regulation, Big Red goalkeeper Kaitlin Tierney was whistled for covering up the ball and Syracuse was awarded a penalty stroke. Kristin Aronowicz, who had a stroke saved in SU's previous outing against Massachusetts, made this opportunity count. She sent a quick, low shot to the bottom left corner of the cage which tied the game at 2-2.
In overtime, Syracuse gained possession and within the first minute forced a penalty corner. Tierney made a great save and the ball went up and down the field several more times. The Big Red never got a solid shot on goal in overtime. With 5:35 remaining, SU was awarded a second penalty stroke and Aronowicz tallied the same way she did on the first, with a low push to the left corner.
Kristin Aronowicz now leads the team with 10 goals and 22 points.
Syracuse (9-2) owns its best record since the 1990 team jumped out to a 10-1 start. The Orangewomen get to put that record to the test on Sunday, Oct. 14 when BIG EAST rival Villanova visits Coyne Field. It promises to be a fierce battle between the only two unbeaten teams left in the league. The Wildcats are 3-0 in the conference, while the Orangewomen are 2-0. Villanova is on a four-game winning streak. Last season, Syracuse defeated the Wildcats, 5-4 in overtime, at Villanova. It was head coach Kathleen Parker's 250th career victory.
