Sophomore midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg) scored on a penalty stroke with 9:25 remaining in double overtime to lift No. 19-ranked Syracuse to a 4-3 victory against Villanova at Coyne Field. The Orangewomen extended their winning streak to eight games and moved into sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST standings. Syracuse is 10-2 overall, 3-0 in the BIG EAST. The winning streak is the longest since the Orangewomen won nine consecutive games in 1993. SU went on to win the BIG EAST Championship that year and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
SU led Villanova, 1-0, at halftime. Junior midfielder Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) dribbled through the circle and shot uncontested into the Wildcat cage.
Villanova (9-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) tied the game at the 32:58 mark of the second half when Stephanie Mayhart made her way through the circle on a similar play to Marks'.
Just more than two minutes later, red-shirt freshman Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) picked off an ill-advised pass by a Villanova defender. She stole the ball and dribbled up the left side of the cage, putting a dodge on Wildcat goalie Meghan Helwig, and then shooting the ball into the cage to give SU a 2-1 lead. It would not last long.
The Wildcats' Colleen Helms answered right back with a score at the 29:59 mark of the second half. She deflected in Stephanie Vrettos' shot on goal to tie the match at 2-2.
The Orangewomen took their third lead of the game with 18:48 remaining in the contest. Freshman sweeper Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) fired her hard drive into the cage on one of SU's four second-half penalty corners. She was assisted by Guglieri and senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown).
Villanova came back again, able to tie the score at 3-3 with a penalty corner of its own at the 16:02 mark. Brooke Bergmann got credit for the goal, while Vanessa Pizzulli and Christina Lugones earned assists on the play.
Neither team scored during the first 15-minute overtime and Syracuse outshot Villanova, 6-2. With 5:25 remaining in the first overtime period, junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) had a chance to win the game with a penalty stroke when Helwig grabbed a Syracuse player's stick. Aronowicz's lifted shot flew wide left. In overtime, the Orangewomen forced five corners to Villanova's one.
The Wildcats had an opportunity to net the game-winner on a breakaway. The Villanova player beat SU goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), but the shot was batted away by senior back Becky Kohler (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra).
With 9:25 remaining in the second overtime, Helwig was whistled for another violation and SU head coach Kathleen Parker subbed Sheaffer into the game from the sidelines to take the stroke. Sheaffer's shot ricocheted off Helwig's hand blocker into the cage. It was Sheaffer's first career goal.
The Orangewomen will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Providence for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
