
Rutgers Defeats Syracuse In 5 Games

SYRACUSE, NY - Shayla Bush had 28 kills to lead the Rutgers University women’s volleyball team to a 3-2 victory against Syracuse on Friday night at Manley Field House. The Scarlet Knights’ record now stands at 9-3 and 4-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Orangewomen’s record is 8-9 and 1-5 in conference play.
The match came down to a fifth and deciding game, and Rutgers edged out Syracuse, 15-13, with a .400 attack percentage. Rutgers took the first game, 30-19, but Syracuse battled back to take the second and fourth games, 30-26 and 30-28. Rutgers had a .251 hitting percentage on the night, compared to Syracuse’s .203.
Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield) led the SU offense with 17 kills on 33 attacks with six errors for a .333 attack percentage. Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) and Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) followed with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomores Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) and Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) led the defense with 11 digs each, and freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) had a career-high three solo blocks to lead the match. Senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) dished out 49 assists and collected seven digs.
Casey Castillo and Mary Kiriakou joined Bush in double figures for the Scarlet Knights with 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Pualani Tuyay dished out 58 assists and had 12 digs on the night.
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday, October 14 when it hosts Villanova at the Women’s Buidling at 1 p.m.
