Forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) of the No. 19-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Guglieri led the Orangewomen with three points in a 4-3 double-overtime victory against Villanova on Oct. 14.
The red-shirt freshman scored a goal by stealing a VU defender's pass and beating the Wildcat goalie in a one-on-one situation. Guglieri also added an assist on a penalty corner. She is third on the team in scoring with 17 points (five goals, seven assists). She ranks second on the squad in assists. Among the leading scorers in the BIG EAST, Guglieri is tied for seventh in overall points.
The Orangewomen are in first place in the BIG EAST Conference with a 3-0 record and have already clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, Nov. 3-4, at Boston College. SU owns a 10-2 overall record and is currently enjoying an eight-game winning streak, the longest since the Orangewomen won nine games in a row during the 1993 season.
Syracuse has two conference games remaining, beginning with a contest at Providence on Friday, Oct. 19. The Orangewomen will then play two non-league matches against Quinnipiac at home on Sunday, Oct. 21, and away at No. 15-ranked Penn State on Tuesday, Oct. 23. SU's final regular-season game is a BIG EAST clash with Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Coyne Field.
The Orangewomen are 7-0 playing at home on Coyne Field this season. They have won their last eight games at home, dating back to Oct. 22, 2000, when they blanked Quinnipiac, 4-0.
