SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Syracuse University graduate student Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) scored an unassisted goal in the 11th minute of overtime to give the women's soccer team a 1-0 BIG EAST Northeast Division victory against Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Stadium.
With just under five minutes remaining in the overtime period, Parsons stepped in front of an errant pass by the defense deep in Hokie territory and raced by two defenders toward the goal. Parsons then evaded Tech keeper Katie Hancock on the right side of the box and booted the ball into the net for the 1-0 victory.
Neither team was able to score due in part to the stellar one-on-one play of the goalkeepers. SU freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made a kick save in a one-on-one situation with Hokie forward Joy Nsubuga midway through the first half. Hancock stopped a blast and a follow-up by ?Cuse sophomore Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation.
Hancock finished with 11 saves, while Myers had seven in her fifth shutout of the season.
Syracuse outshot Virginia Tech 22-16 and held a 14-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Orangewomen improved to 10-6-0 overall and 3-3 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division. The Hokies are now 8-9-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division.
The Orangewomen will play its season finale against Colgate on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Soccer Stadium. The game is being televised by Time-Warner and will air Friday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. It will be the last game for Parsons and seniors Molly Schmelzle (St. Louis, Miss./Cor Jesu Academy), Tracy Stalker (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and Candy Reich (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional).
