
Syracuse Sweeps Doubleheader Against Niagara and Canisius

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse women’s volleyball team won two matches, defeating both Niagara and Canisius, 3-0, in a doubleheader on Wednesday at the Women’s Building. The Orangewomen hit .324 against Niagara and a school record .485 versus Canisius. SU increased its winning streak to six and extended its overall record to 14-9. Niagara’s record stands at 7-9, while Canisius is now 3-14.
Senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) hit in double figures in both matches. She recorded a team-high 13 kills against Niagara and tied for the team-high with 14 kills versus Canisius. She had a career-high .571 hitting percentage against Canisius.
Syracuse outblocked Niagara, 12-1. Junior Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) led SU with five total blocks, tying a career high with three solo blocks. Sophomores Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) and Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) tied career highs with four service aces each. Skelly also dished out 22 assists in the match.
Six players hit above .300 in the 3-0 win against the Golden Griffins. Freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) had 14 kills on 18 attempts with two errors for a career-high .667 attack percentage. Freshman Morgan Jones (Malad, ID/Malad) joined her in double figures with 11 kills on 17 attempts with two errors for a .529 hitting percentage, and Ashley Kimes (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley North) chipped in 10 kills.
Senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) is now tied for 10th place in career matches played at SU with 124. With the two block assists in the two matches, Carroll is now in sole possession of nine place in all-time block assists at Syracuse with 238.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, Nov. 2 when it faces Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. on the road. On Sunday, Nov. 4, SU meets West Virginia at 2 p.m.
