Orangemen Soccer Loses at Hartwick, 2-1

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team lost its second consecutive game, dropping a 2-1 decision at Hartwick College on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The Orangemen are now 7-6-1, while the Hawks improved to 8-7.
The game featured two of the top teams in the New York. Syracuse entered the game ranked third in the region. Hartwick was also in the top 10, occupying the seventh position.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead when Rob Catana netted an unassisted goal in the 15th minute of play. The score remained 1-0 until after halftime. Neil McLean scored Hartwick's final goal off a pass by Percy Avetrani with 39 minutes remaining in the contest.
Syracuse tried to get back in the game in the 75th minute when sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) tallied his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Junior midfielder Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was credited with the assist.
The Orangemen outshot Hartwick, 20-10, and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) made five saves in the loss. Hartwick keeper Randall Moate made 10 saves.
The Hawks have now taken the last two meetings between the two schools. Hartwick leads the all-time series 14-9-3.
Syracuse has now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Orangemen were beaten at fifth-ranked St. John's, 4-0, on Friday, Oct. 26.
The Orangemen's next match is on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Notre Dame. It is the final BIG EAST regular-season game of the season for Syracuse. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
