SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Syracuse men's soccer team fell to 7-7-1 on the season, losing at Notre Dame, 2-1 in overtime, on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Orangemen finished the BIG EAST portion of their schedule 4-5-1. The Fighting Irish, ranked 20th in the latest Soccer America national poll, are now 11-5 and end their conference season at 7-3.
The Orangemen led 1-0, but a goal by Notre Dame's Devon Prescod with just eight seconds remaining in the second half forced overtime. Prescod picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season. Justin Detter was credited with the assist. Kevin Goldthwaite ended the contest 3:38 into the extra session when he took a through ball from the left side and slipped it by SU goalkeeper Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont).
Both teams were scoreless until the 81st minute. Syracuse midfielder Darren Ingles (Overisje, Belgium) tallied his second goal of the season on passes from forwards Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) and Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) to give the Orangemen a 1-0 lead.
Johnson's assist moved him into seventh place on the Syracuse single-season scoring list with 32 points. Johnson also leads Syracuse with 12 goals.
Peters made eight saves in the loss. Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Sawyer also went the distance, making two saves. The Fighting Irish outshot SU, 21-6, and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Syracuse has now lost three consecutive games for the first time this season. It is the Orange's longest losing streak since dropping the last five games of the 2000 season.
The Orangemen will play their regular-season finale on Wednesday, November 7 versus Cornell. Kickoff at the Soccer Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
