SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) tallied three assists to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory versus Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium.
Park now has 10 assists on the season, breaking the Orangemen record for assists by a freshman formerly held by Steve Morris (1986) and Ed Pinon (1989). Park's 10 assists on the season ranks third on the SU single-season list regardless of class.
Syracuse is now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh drops to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Park's three assists also matches the third-highest single-game total in SU history. He is the sixth player to record three assists in one game, including senior John Andrade (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) who accomplished the feat in the Orangemen's victory at Villanova on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Morris holds the record with five assists versus St. Bonaventure in 1989.
Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) scored two goals on the afternoon, his third multi-goal game of the season. Johnson put the Orangemen ahead, 1-0, in the 37th minute with his eighth goal of the season. Senior Jeff Lewis (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Shenendehowa) also received an assist on the play. Johnson and Park hooked up again just 1:28 into the second half to give SU a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats tallied their lone goal in the 70th minute when Toure Weaver scored on the rebound of a shot by Nate Montgomery.
Junior midfielder Ryan Hall (Great Falls, Va./Herndon) was the beneficiary of Park's third assist. Hall took the pass and drove it by the Villanova goalkeeper on the far post. It was Hall's third goal of the season and the record-breaking assist for Park.
Junior Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored the final goal of the game with no time left. Villanova goalkeeper Justin Gaul played a ball while out of the box with 10 seconds remaining, and Cristofori launched a shot over the keeper's head from 60 yards as the clock expired.
Senior goalkeeper Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) earned the win for SU with five saves. Peters made several key stops including back-to-back saves on point blank shots by the Wildcats in the first half. Peters leads the team with 23 saves on the season. Gaul made four saves in the loss.
The Orangemen will try and extend their two-game winning streak on Tuesday, Oct. 9 when they host regional rival Army. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
