SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to its third consecutive victory, 4-2 versus Army on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the Soccer Stadium at Lampe Athletics Complex. The Orangemen, ranked 23rd in this week's NSCAA Top 25, are now 6-3 overall, while the Black Knights are now 3-6-1.
The SU frontline of Torok, sophomore Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) and freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) did all of the scoring for the Orangemen. In addition to Torok's performance, Johnson recorded a goal and an assist, while Park had a goal and two assists.
Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Johnson scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season off a pass from Park. Syracuse took a two-goal advantage in the 25th minute when Torok scored his first goal of the night off a header from Johnson.
The Black Knights' offense came alive however, netting two goals to tie the score before intermission. Chris DeFiori tallied his second goal of the season, an unassisted score in the 32nd minute, and Todd Severson followed putting home a goal on a cross from Ian Shipps with less than a minute left in the first half.
The Orangemen took control of the game just two minutes into the second half when Park scored his third goal of the season. Torok was credited with the assist. Torok also scored the final goal of the night, converting on a breakaway set up by Park's second assist.
Senior goalkeeper Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) won his third consecutive game, making four saves. He is now 4-1 on the season and leads the team with 27 saves. Tyler Donnell made five saves in the losing effort.
Park now has 12 assists, the second-highest single-season total ever for a Syracuse player. Steve Morris holds the record with 16 helpers in 1989. Park entered the game leading the nation in assists with a 1.25 per game average. Johnson now leads the team with 10 goals and 24 points. He started this week's play ranked in the top five in the country in both categories.
The Orangemen have now scored four goals in each of their last three games. The last time a Syracuse team scored four or more times in three consecutive outings was the beginning of the 1952 season when SU defeated Sampson (7-5), Brockport (5-4 OT) and Albany State (6-1).
The Orangemen will put their winning streak on the line on Saturday, Oct. 13 versus the 16th-ranked and defending national champion Connecticut Huskies. Syracuse defeated then top-ranked UConn, 1-0, last season before being eliminated by the Huskies in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament, 2-0. Saturday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
