PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Three members of the Syracuse men's soccer team have been honored by the BIG EAST for their performances in victories versus Villanova and Pittsburgh this past week.
Sophomore Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, senior Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) was honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week.
Johnson's award is his second of the season. The sophomore forward scored four goals and had one assist in SU's two victories. He scored two goals each in the wins against Villanova and Pittsburgh. With eight games remaining, Johnson has already matched his team-leading totals of nine goals and 21 points from last season. He leads the BIG EAST in scoring.
Peters' conference award is the first goalkeeper honor for the Orangemen this season. The senior earned the first two complete-game victories of his career, making four saves at Villanova and five saves versus Pittsburgh. Peters is 3-1 this season and leads the Orange in minutes played (339:22), goals against average (1.33) and saves 923).
Park is the conference's top rookie for the second time this season. He recorded five assists in two games, giving him 10 for the season. Park's total broke the Syracuse single-season assist record for freshman, and ranks third on the SU single-season list regardless of class. He leads the BIG EAST in assists. Park's honor is the third of the year for the Orangemen after he won it on Sept. 10 and freshman goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) was honored on Sept. 24.
Syracuse takes a break from conference action when it hosts regional-rival Army on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. The Orangemen get back into BIG EAST play when they will face 20th-ranked Connecticut at home on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
