Syracuse Will Attempt to Rebound Following a Pair of Losses at Pittsburgh
Last Saturday, the Orangemen and Orangewomen traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a dual meet against the Panthers. The men lost, 196-45, while the women lost by a 148-91 decision.
The Series Against Florida Atlantic
The Syracuse men own a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series against Florida Atlantic. Last season, was the first loss for the Orangemen in the series, 144-90. The meeting last season took place on February 3 and was held in Boca Raton. Other schools that competed were Miami, Syracuse, Florida Atlantic and North Florida. The Orangewomen posted victories against all three opponents: Florida Atlantic (137-100), Miami (139-97) and North Florida (179-47). The SU women are 4-0 all-time against Florida Atlantic.
The St. Bonaventure Meet (10/13)
The Syracuse swimming and diving team won its first meet of the season at home against St. Bonaventure. The men won, 128-11, while the women posted a 154-83 triumph to extend their series win streak over the Bonnies to 11-0. First-year swimmers won 10 events for Syracuse.
Freshman Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif.) won three events in his first collegiate swim meet. He was first in the 200 IM (1:59.10), the 500 free (4:51.38) and as part of the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.76). Five other Orangemen captured first-place finishes, including freshman Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va.) in the 50 freestyle (21.79), senior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) in the 200 butterfly (1:57.09), freshman AJ Newman (Narromine, Australia) in the 100 freestyle (48.27), freshman Gustavo Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden) in the 200 backstroke (1:56.94) and sophomore Steve Polucha (Cumberland, RI) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:22.41).
The Orangewomen had two swimmers win three events against the Bonnies. Sophomore Megan Daney (Newtown, Pa.) was victorious in the 50 freestyle (25.22), the 100 freestyle (54.79) and as part of the 400 medley relay (3:59.01). Freshman Ashley Danowski (Landisville, Pa.) captured first place in the 500 free (5:08.48), the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.60) and as part of the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.25).
The Colgate Meet (10/20)
In their first road meet of the year, the Syracuse teams came out on top at Colgate. The men won, 125.5-115.5, while the women posted a 152-87 triumph. Sophomore Elyse McDonough (Delmar, NY) and senior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) each won three events. McDonough won the 50 freestyle (25.30) and the 100 butterfly (58.82). She teamed up with freshmen Sarah Reed (West Chester, Pa.) and Lisa Fong (Olympia, Wash.) and sophomore Annie Tudryn (Springfield, Mass.) to win the 200 medley relay.
Filipovic earned his three victories in the 200 freestyle (1:46.93), the 100 butterfly (52.65) and the 200 medley relay (1:38.20). His teammates in the relay were freshmen Gustavo Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden), A.J. Newman (Narromine, Australia) and sophomore Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany).
In diving, sophomore Ricky Rodriguez (Long Beach, NY) finished second on both the one and three-meter boards. Freshman George Gerard (Brookline, Mass.) was fourth in both events.
The Pittsburgh Meet (10/27)
The Orange ran into a highly-competitive Pittsburgh squad in their first BIG EAST meet of the season. The Panther men won, 196-45, while the Pitt women registered a 148-91 victory.
Highlights for the Orangewomen included freshman Lisa Fong (Olympia, Wash.) winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:56.20. The women's 200 butterfly was dominated by Syracuse. McDonough finished first with a time of 2:06.70. Freshman Elisa James (Lakewood, Wash.) was second (2:09.37), and junior Jennifer Jonusaitis (Sault St. Marie, Ontario/Canada) was third with a time of 2:12.65. Senior Stacy Wells (New Hartford, NY) finished fourth in the same event.
Senior Kelly Bryon (Uxbridge, Ontario/Canada) won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:06.49. Sophomores Annie Tudryn (Springfield, Mass.) and Kalei Mahi (Salinas, Calif.) were 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke.
Freshman Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va.) was the only Orangeman to place better than third in an individual event. The rookie captured second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.04.
