L CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – Red-shirt freshman forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) dove and tipped in a free hit with 5:37 left in the contest to give No. 18-ranked Syracuse a 3-2 victory against Rutgers in the BIG EAST semifinals at Boston College's Alumni Stadium. It was Guglieri's sixth goal of the season and second game-winner of the year. It marked SU's seventh one-goal victory in 2001.
Syracuse, the tournament's No. 1 seed, scored all three of its goals in the second half.
Rutgers (4-13) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind Heidi Harvey's goal at the 26:04 mark of the first half. Harvey redirected a pass from Leann Grondski on a penalty-corner play from the left post.
The Scarlet Knights led 1-0 at halftime.
Junior midfielder and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown got the Orangewomen on the board at the 25:23 mark of the first half. She weaved her way through the circle and tapped in an unassisted marker to even the score at 1-1.
Rutgers took its second lead (2-1) of the game with 18:29 remaining in the contest. Once again, the Scarlet Knights scored off a penalty corner. This time, Andschana Mendes lifted the ball past SU goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). Mendes was assisted by Harvey and Rebecca Lippincott.
Syracuse junior back Missy Grosman (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) created the game-tying goal. She pushed up the right side of the field and delivered what appeared to be a shot on goal. Her attempt was tipped in by senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) to tie the match at 2-2 with 14:38 remaining.
Freshman forward Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) helped SU gain possession on the right side of the field in the closing six minutes. Just outside the circle, Kristin Aronowicz took a free hit that was deflected into the cage by Guglieri.
Latsko started in goal for SU and finished with six saves. The Orangewomen owned an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners and a 13-12 edge in shots.
Syracuse's record improves to 14-3, the most wins since 1995. The Orangewomen will be looking for their first BIG EAST Tournament Championship since 1995 when they take on either second-seeded Boston College or third-seeded Villanova. The championship game is scheduled for noon on Sunday, Nov. 4. The winner advances to the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
The SU field hockey team has won two BIG EAST titles (1993 and 1995) and has appeared in two NCAA Tournaments (1993 and 1995).
