The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its 2001 STX Division I Regional All-Americans on Monday. Syracuse had three players earn regional All-America honors this year. The sister tandem of Michelle and Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) were selected to the STX/NFHCA Mideast Region First Team, while Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was named to the Mideast Region Second Team.
Kristin Aronowicz, a junior midfielder, led the Orangewomen in scoring for the second-straight season. This year, she tallied a career-high 37 points on a BIG EAST-leading 17 goals. Her 17 goals tied for second on SU's single-season record list and she was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team for the second consecutive year. Only a junior, Aronowicz returns next year on pace to become the school's all-time leading scorer. She has 76 career points (33 goals, 10 assists) and needs 19 more to break Julie Williamson's and Yvonne Milionis' careeer scoring mark of 94 points.
Senior forward Michelle Aronowicz first earned regional All-American honors as a sophomore when she was named to the second team. This season she finished as the team's second-leading scorer with a career-high 27 points, including a team-best 11 assists. Michelle received All-BIG EAST First Team accolades this season and was the recipient of the BIG EAST Tournament's Most Valuable Player award for scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Villanova in the title contest. For her career, Michelle compiled 81 points (32 goals, 17 assists) to finish sixth on the school's all-time scoring list.
Junior midfielder Michelle Marks won regional All-America honors for the first time in her career. This season she earned second-team All-BIG EAST laurels and finished in a tie for fourth on the team in scoring with nine points (two goals, five assists).
The Orangewomen advanced to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. They defeated California in the first round, 2-1 in overtime, before falling to Maryland in the quarterfinals, 6-0. The Terps have advanced to the last three final fours and won the national championship in 1999.
Syracuse, the BIG EAST regular-season and tournament champion, finished the 2001 season with a 16-4 record, 5-0 in the BIG EAST.
