SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse head men's soccer coach Dean Foti announced today the hiring of Jaro Zawislan as an assistant coach for the Orangemen.
Zawislan has coached in the last two NCAA Men's College Cup Final Fours. This past season he was an assistant at Stanford, serving as the goalkeeper coach for both the men's and women's programs. In 2000, he helped Creighton University to a second-place finish in the Men's College Cup.
"We are excited to have Jaro join our staff at Syracuse," Foti said. "He brings a wealth of experience to the position, along with a talent for teaching the game and connecting with young players."
Zawislan was Creighton's goalkeeper coach for the 1999 and 2000 seasons. The Bluejays won the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship, and goalkeeper Mike Gabb was named to the Final Four All-Tournament team. In 1999, Zawislan mentored his brother, Tom, to All-American recognition and a 0.51 goals against average, third-best in the nation. As a team, Creighton boasted the lowest team goals against average in Division I.
While at Creighton, Zawislan served on the coaching staff of the Nebraska State Olympic Development program. He also has been the director of Jaro's Soccer Academy in Toronto since 1996. Zawislan has also been involved at the national level. He served as the goalkeeper coach at the Canadian Soccer Academy in 1996 and worked with the Under 20 Canadian National Team in 2001. Zawislan was also a player/head coach for the Columbia (SC) Heat of the United System of Independent Soccer Leagues in 1995.
Zawislan played collegiately at Clemson from 1990-93, starting every game of his four-year career. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 1993 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, and was a three-time All-ACC selection. Zawislan holds the Clemson record for career saves with 446. He also ranks third on the Tigers' all-time shutout list with 23, and is fourth all-time at Clemson with a 1.01 career goals against average. He played professionally with the Heat, Arka Gdynia, a Division II team in Poland, and the Detroit Neon/Safari of the Continental Indoor Soccer League.
Zawislan graduated from Clemson in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in computer science. He went on to earn a master's degree in liberal studies with an emphasis on philosophy of sport coaching from Creighton in 2001.
The Orangemen finished the 2001 campaign with a 7-8-1 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Syracuse was ranked as high as 18th in the nation during the season, the second consecutive season that SU has achieved a top-20 ranking.
