
Freeney Named To Walter Camp All-America Team

Along with the honor from the Walter Camp Foundation, Freeney was named the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team. He has been honored as an All-American by the Football Writers Association of America, Football News, the AFCA, CNNSI.com and ABC Sports Online for his record-setting performance this season.
Freeney set NCAA, BIG EAST and Syracuse single-season records with 17.5 sacks in 2001. He led the conference in forced fumbles with eight and his 11 forced fumbles and recovered (eight forced, three recovered) is also an NCAA record.
Freeney is a finalist for the Bednarik Award which will be announced later tonight, Thursday, December 6, as part of the ESPN College Football Awards Show. The Bednarik Award is presented to the nation's outstanding defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club.
He is also a finalist for the 2001 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is presented annually to college's best all-around defensive football player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The organizations will name the winner and present the trophy at the annual gala, held at the Adam's Mark Hotel in downtown Charlotte, NC on December 10.
