The Orangemen moved into sixth place (out of 13 BIG EAST teams) with their 262 points. The Pittsburgh men lead the competition with 446 points.
SU's women found themselves in ninth place after day two with 146 points. Notre Dame is at the head of the pack with 457.50 points.
Both of Syracuse's 200 medley relays set new school records in their respective races. The Orangewomen, made up of freshman Megan Daney (Newtown, PA), freshman Annie Tudryn (Springfield, MA), freshman Elyse McDonough (Delmar, NY) and senior Eleanor Thoet (Bath, ME), captured sixth place with a record time of 1:46.61. The old mark was 1:46.73 set in 1997.
The SU men's 200 medley relay consisted of senior Josko Vucetic (Split, Croatia), senior Ilia Mikhailov (Alta, Sweden), junior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and freshman Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany). The foursome took second place in the finals with a time of 1:30.02, not only a new school record, but an NCAA "B" qualifying time.
Filipovic won his second gold medal of the meet in the 100 butterfly. He posted a time of 48.14, beating the old school standard of 48.51 set by Sebastian Goulet in 1993.
The other school records that fell Friday night were in the women's 100 breaststroke and the men's 100 backstroke. Freshman Kalei Mahi (Salinas, CA) took third place in the 100 breastroke in a time of 1:04.04, an NCAA "B" qualifying standard. Vucetic successfully defended his crown in the 100 backstroke with a new personal-best of 48.10, also an NCAA "B" qualifying time. His time last year in the same event was 49.07.
Other highlights included senior Dustin Riley (Carson City, NV) winning the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:57.37. It was his first-ever gold medal at the BIG EAST Championship.
Mikhailov was second in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 55.80.
On Saturday, February 17, preliminaries will be held in the men's and women's 200 backstroke, the men's and women's 100 yard freestyle, the men's and women's 200 breaststroke and the men's and women's 200 butterfly.
