The Terrapins (16-11) took an early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first. The Orangewomen came right back, however, scoring a run in the home half of the frame. Sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA) drew a one-out walk and then hustled all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH). Sophomore Julie Dunn (Springfield, MA) drove in the run with a single.
Maryland took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second when Michelle Burrell hit a three-run home run.
Syracuse mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases for sophomore Lindsay Richards (Burr Ridge, IL). Richards drove in her second run of the season with an RBI single. Senior Shanna Newell (Fort Edward, NY) cut the lead to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly, her first run batted in of the season.
The Terrapins added a run in the seventh to extend their lead to 5-3. Syracuse looked to rally again in the bottom of the inning, but the game ended with the tying run on first.
Richards led the offense with two hits. It was her team-leading second multi-hit game of the season.
Junior Heather Brown (Bloomfield, NM) suffered the loss for Syracuse. She gave up four runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. Brown struck out three and walked three, dropping her record to 2-6. Jenn Shellhammer was the winner, improving to 3-4.
Syracuse's scheduled consolation game with Troy State was cancelled due to rain. The Orangewomen now have two weeks to prepare for their next game at Radford on March 31. Syracuse will then play its inaugural BIG EAST contest on April 1 at Virginia Tech.
