Syracuse is now 7-16, while the Red Raiders dropped to 16-16 for the season.
Brown's 21 strikeouts equals the largest total in NCAA Division I history in a game that lasted nine-innings or less. California's Michele Granger struck out 21 in a seven-inning game versus Creighton April 22, 1991. The NCAA record is 26 strikeouts set by Cleveland State's Amy Kyler versus Illinois-Chicago in a 16-inning game on May 3, 1997. Brown's performance ties the sixth-best total in NCAA history regradless of game length, and is also the best in NCAA competiton since Kyler set the mark.
The righthander struck out at least one batter in every inning, including setting down the side in four frames. Brown held the Red Raiders hitless through seven innings, but a one-out double in the eighth broke up the no-hit bid. It was Colgate's only hit of the game. Brown's second shutout of the season improves her record to 3-8.
The game's lone tally came in the bottom of the ninth when sophomore Kristin Collins (Stow, MA) singled to right field to drive home sophomore Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, CA). Holowich led off the inning with a single and then stole her first base of the season. She scored from second on Collins' hit. Holowich led the offense with two hits.
Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) picked up where Brown left off, blanking the Red Raiders for her third win of the season. DiMaggio (3-6) tossed her second shutout of the season, limiting Colgate to three hits. She struck out six and walked just one.
The only offense in the nightcap came in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH) led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Colgate rightfielder attempting to make a play at first. Junior Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, PA) entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jaime Grillo (Brentwood, NY). Snyder scored her team-leading seventh run of the season on a wild pitch.
SU had five players with a single each. Holowich, Collins, Grillo and freshman Cortney Nickerson (Farmington, NM) each reached safely.
The Orangewomen continue play outside the BIG EAST with a doubleheader at Binghamton on Wednesday, April 11 at 3 p.m. Syracuse returns home on April 14 to face conference rival Connecticut at 12 p.m.
