The Orangewomen are now 11-20 overall and 2-8 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars are 19-21 overall and 3-9 in league play. The game one victory snapped a seven-game conference losing streak for SU.
Syracuse junior Heather Brown (Bloomfield, NM) took a perfect game into the seventh inning of the opener, but a one-out single spoiled both the perfect game and the no-hitter. Kerri Jacklets ruined the shutout with a two-run home run to left field.
Brown won her second-consecutive start, striking out eight in seven innings. She did not walk anyone and gave up just the two seventh-inning hits. She is now 6-9 on the season.
The Syracuse offense erupted for its largest single-game output of the season, plating 11 runs.
Lincoln drove in the first run of the day with a double in the second inning. SU tallied three more in the third on a two-RBI single by freshman Jaime Grillo (Brentwood, NY) and a single by Lincoln. The Orangewomen put the game well out of reach in the seventh inning with five unearned runs. Holowich drove in two in the inning and sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA) was credited with an RBI double.
Lincoln went 3-for-3 in the game with a walk. It was her first career three-hit game. Holowich also had three hits in the contest, her second three-hit outing in her last two games. Sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH) and senior Missy Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) each had a hit.
The second game turned out to be a pitcher's duel with the Friars plating the lone run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning. An RBI single by Syracuse native Chrissy Iannolo was all Providence would need as the Orangewomen could muster only five hits for the game. It was Iannolo's first career run batted in.
The Orangewomen's best chance to score came in the top of the fifth when senior Shanna Newell (Fort Edward, NY) tripled to start the inning. However, she remained at third after a strikeout, groundout and fly ball to end the inning.
Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction) suffered the loss despite allowing only four hits in seven innings. DiMaggio didn't walk anyone and struck out three, but her record dropped to 4-9 for the season.
Collins did most of the damage offensively for the Orangewomen, collecting two hits. Lincoln and Grillo also singled.
Syracuse has now won three of its last four games and six out of its last 10. It is the Orangewomen's best 10-game stretch of the season.
SU continues its BIG EAST road trip on Sunday when the Orangewomen take on Boston College. The doubleheader starts at 12 p.m.
