The Orangemen finished the race in 6:09.2, four and one-half seconds behind the Cornell boat and seven seconds ahead of Navy. Eric Miller (Syracuse, NY, Henninger HS) served as the coxswain for the Orange's varsity eight. Karl Sudar (Springfield, VA) was the stroke and John Merzig (Albany, NY) was the bow.
In the second varsity eight race, SU's junior varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:10.7. The finish was three and one-half seconds behind the time set by Cornell. Navy finished third in 6:22.1.
Syracuse finished third in the third varsity, or varsity four race. The Orangemen also had a third place showing in the first novice eight race.
By winning the varsity eight race, Cornell won the Goes Cup. The Goes Cup is awarded to the winner of the first varsity eight from these three schools. Starting in 1955, Clifford "Tip" Goes, a 1913 SU coxswain, created the cup to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy.
The Orangemen's next race is Saturday and Sunday April 28-29 at the Georgetown Invitational in Washington, D.C.
