Syracuse's sixth ranked varsity eight boat is highest ranked varsity boat of the nine BIG EAST schools competing in the challenge. Rutgers is ranked 15th in the US Rowing/ Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll, while Notre Dame is No. 18. The varsity eight, junior varsity eight and novice eight will row in heats and then finals, while the varsity four and novice four will have one race each to decide a champion.
SU's varsity eight is coxswained by Heather DiLoreto (East Amherst, NY). Rachael Kirchhoff (Juneau, AK) and Alicea Kochis (Naugatuck, CT) row in the fifth and sixth seat, respectively.
Last year Syracuse's varsity eight, junior varsity eight and varsity four won their races at the Georgetown Invitational, which was the precursor to the conference-wide challenge.
The BIG EAST Rowing Challenge invites all conference schools that sponsor a rowing team. Along with SU, Rutgers and Notre Dame; Boston College, Connecticut, Georgetown, Miami, Villanova and West Virginia will be racing for the challenge championship.
