Orangemen Crew Takes Three of Four Races Against Dartmouth

The Orangemen won the junior varsity eight, the varsity four and the novice eight races. In the varsity eight race, the race which decides the winner of the Packard Trophy, Syracuse lost to Dartmouth.
Syracuse's junior varsity eight, which was coxswained by Peter Romano (East Amherst, NY), crossed the finish line 2.2 second ahead of Dartmouth.
The Orange came frombehind to win the novice eight race by one second. Will Villon (Los Angeles, CA) was the coxswain, while Andrew Wright (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and Nick Alexander (Wilmette, IL) rowed in the fifth and sixth seats, respectively.
Syracuse-A won the varsity four race, with Syracuse-B coming in second and Dartmouth placing third. Pat Mahardy (Liverpool, NY, Liverpool HS) and Bill Schmidt (San Bernadino, CA) powered the Syracuse-A boat to a 7:14.8 finish.
The Orange's varsity eight finished 6.1 seconds behind Dartmouth. The varsity eight rowed in a new shell, the Kristen E., which was Christened after the races. The Orangemen also Christened the Bob Otis and Les Foster Co-Captains '38 shell, which the varsity will use in the fall of 2001.
The next race for SU is the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, June 1-2, on Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
