All the Orangewomen offense came in the third inning. Sophomore Jackie Herrman's (Warren, OH) single to right field scored classmate Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, CA) for SU's first run. With runners on second and third with two outs, senior Missy Bieman (Wingham, Ontario), playing in her final game, drove a single to left field. Sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA) scored easily from third, and Herrman was able to score when the RedStorm leftfielder bobbled the ball.
Herrman led the SU offense with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Holowich also collected two hits in the game.
The first game of Sunday's twin bill was a pitcher's duel with the teams combining for just one run on six hits.
St. John's scored the game's only run in the home half of the fourth inning.. Kelly Houghton singled through the middle with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice. Cecelia Baston then drove in the run with a single to centerfield.
Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) suffered the loss for the Orangewomen despite her second 10-plus strikeout game of the season. DiMaggio struck out 10 hitters in six innings of work. She recorded at least one whiff in every inning. She allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter. DiMaggio finishes the season with an 8-13 mark.
The RedStorm's Gina Calabrese threw a three-hit shutout to improve her record to 14-14. Calabrese faced just three over the minimum, striking out two without a walk.
Freshmen did all the damage at the plate for Syracuse. Nikki Lincoln (Baton Rouge, LA), Cortney Nickerson (Farmington, NM) and Jaime Grillo (Brentwood, NY) had the Orangewomen's hits, all singles.
