Johnson, a sixth-year senior fullback and captain of the SU football team, appeared in the Innovision Productions, Inc., (Fayetteville, NY) spot "Words." The commercial, produced for The BIG EAST Conference, urges parents, teachers and coaches to use supportive and encouraging words in their communication with youngsters and warned of the devastating effects of intimidation, sarcasm and mocking. The commercial aired on CBS, ESPN and ESPN Regional during the 2000-01 basketball season.
Johnson is an accomplished actor, having performed in numerous theatrical productions, and is an on-air radio personality, hosting "The Sunday Night Love Flight" on SU radio station WJPZ. His most recent on-stage performance was in April as the lead role in the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company production of Happy Ending, which was written by Douglas Turner.
Johnson has served both the Syracuse and SU communities. He was the coordinator of the 1999 and 2000 "Jam Session" events, which feature a basketball game between members of the Syracuse media and the Orangemen football team. Monies raised through Jam Session benefit local charitable organizations. Johnson served two terms as the SU Student-Athlete Council president from 1998-2000, leading student-athletes in community service activities and in improving the quality of life by improving communications with coaches and administrators. He is also a regular participant in SU’s Student-Athlete Speaker’s Bureau, which visits local schools and community organizations.
The Telly Awards honor excellence in TV commercials, programs and non-broadcast film and video production. "Words" was one of 800 winners chosen from more than 11,000 entries throughout the United States.
