SYRACUSE, NY -- The non-conference portion of the 2001-02 Syracuse University men's basketball schedule, featuring participation in the NIT Preseason Tournament, pairings with foes from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Conference USA, and a Fan Appreciation Day sponsored by Carrier Corporation, was released today.
Dates and opponents for the single elimination Preseason NIT have not been determined. With two victories the Orangemen would advance to the semifinals on Nov. 21 at Madison Square Garden. The NIT Final and Consolation games are slated for Nov. 23.
In lieu of the annual Carrier Classic, Carrier Corporation and Syracuse University will team up to present "Fan Appreciation Days" at three separate athletic events during 2001-02. The games will include the Dec. 8 men's basketball game against North Carolina State, a BIG EAST Conference women's basketball game and the Nov. 24 football game versus Boston College.
"The relationship between SU Athletics and Carrier Corporation remains strong," said SU Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel. "We are moving to individual game sponsorships to address many needs, including scheduling challenges regarding the academic calendar, the NCAA rules governing scheduling and tournament exemptions, and the increasing challenge of scheduling both football and men's basketball in the same venue." "Carrier Corporation is excited about these scheduling changes which will provide our employees and all Syracuse fans with an enhanced level of excitement and the continuation of support for SU Athletics," said Matt Chadderdon, vice president, Carrier Corporation.
In keeping with recent scheduling policies, Syracuse has lined up contests with other Division I programs in New York. The Orangemen will host rivals Binghamton (Nov. 18), Colgate (Nov. 27), Cornell (Nov. 29), Hofstra (Dec. 4) and Buffalo (Dec. 29). Syracuse will also host Conference USA-member South Florida (Dec. 20). Syracuse will play Albany (Dec. 2) in the Pepsi Arena.
Two other non-conference pairings feature tilts at ACC-member Georgia Tech (Dec. 15) and at Tennessee (TBA) from the SEC. Three opponents -- Georgia Tech, Hofstra and Tennessee -- earned NCAA berths last season.
The Orangemen were 25-9 last season and made a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.
