"We're elated to have 'Coach Mac' become a vital part of our broadcast team. He is respected throughout the area by fans and among his peers alike. His insights of the game, knowledge of SU football and his relationship with our coaching staff and players will offer an intuitive analysis for our listeners," said SU Associate Director of Athletics Michael Veley.
MacPherson coached the Orangemen from 1981 through the 1990 season, when he became the head coach of the NFL's New England Patriots. His overall record at SU was 66-46-4 and included an undefeated season in 1987, when his team finished 11-0-1 and tied Auburn in the 1988 Sugar Bowl. Prior to coming to SU, MacPherson served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns.
"I feel extremely delighted to be a real part of the Syracuse University football program once again," MacPherson said. "This broadcasting position keeps me on the inside of the team, by watching practice, talking with coaches and players and preparing myself to relay that information to our great fans."
"I'm looking forward to being back in Syracuse and becoming intimately involved with the players and coaching staff," MacPherson said. "Syracuse will always be a special part of my life."
Syracuse head football coach Paul Pasqualoni served as an assistant under MacPherson before being hired as his replacement in January 1991.
"We're all very excited to have Coach MacPherson join the broadcast team for Syracuse football," Pasqualoni said. "His great enthusiasm for college football and colorful insight will be enjoyed by our fans."
The SU Radio Network includes 25 stations in New York, New Jersey and Vermont. MacPherson will make his debut on August 26 when Syracuse and Georgia Tech meet in the Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
