It is the third straight season that the Orangewomen open up against Albany.
SU owns an all-time record of 2-0 against the Great Danes. In 1999, the Orangewomen posted a 5-1 victory. Last season, Syracuse won a 3-0 decision. Both games were played at Coyne Field.
The Orangewomen were picked to finish in a tie for first in the BIG EAST this season, right up there along with three-time defending champion Connecticut, according to the league's preseason coaches poll. Syracuse received four of the six first-place votes and garnered 21 points. The Huskies received 21 points and captured two first-place votes. Boston College and Rutgers were tied for third in the poll, while Villanova was fifth and Providence, a BIG EAST Tournament participant last season, was picked to finish sixth.
Boston College will serve as the site for the 2001 BIG EAST Field Hockey Tournament on Nov. 3-4. The Orangewomen won both of their titles (1993 and 1995) in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Michelle and Kristin Aronowicz, the top two returning scorers from a season ago, were each selected to the 2001 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, along with goalie Audrey Latsko.
Kristin Aronowicz, a junior midfielder, led the team in scoring last season with 11 goals and 26 points. She was and should once again be SU's main threat on penalty corners. She was chosen as a first-team All-BIG EAST performer a year ago.
Michelle Aronowicz, a senior forward, was third in scoring last year with nine goals. She found the back of the cage in four out of five conference matches en route to being named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Junior Audrey Latsko was a unanimous selection and the only goalie represented on the preseason All-BIG EAST Team. She was a third-team All-American in 2000, after leading the conference in goals against average with a 1.14 mark. It was the lowest goals against average posted by an SU goalkeeper since Cheri Herr's 0.90 mark in 1994. Latsko also ranked second in the nation in save percentage (.872) last season.
Kathleen Parker, one of the winningest coaches in collegiate field hockey, is back for her 24th season as head coach at Syracuse. Last fall, she notched her 250th career victory and became just the ninth Division I coach to reach that milestone. She enters the 2001 season with a career coaching record of 251-161-14, good for a .606 winning percentage. During her 23 seasons as head coach, Parker has guided the Orangewomen to 17 winning campaigns. Her teams have qualified for all 12 BIG EAST Tournaments and have maintained a place in the Top 20 for nine of the past 10 seasons.
SU has eight first-year players on its team, the most rookies to join the squad since the 1996 season.
