
Orangemen Shut Out Adelphi, 3-0

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season, defeating Adelphi, 3-0, on Saturday, Sept. 8. The Orangemen are now 2-1 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 0-3. It was Syracuse's eighth consecutive win versus Adelphi.
After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Jeff Lewis (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) gave SU the lead in the 55th minute with his first career goal. Junior Kevin Boyle (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) were credited with assists. It was Boyle's first career point.
Thirteen minutes later, junior midfielder Ryan Hall (Great Falls, Va./Herndon) netted his first score of the season, and first since his rookie year in 1999, on passes from sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) and junior midfielder Darren Ingles (Overisje, Belgium/Millfield-England). Johnson wrapped up the scoring with his second goal of the season in the 85th minute. Senior Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) and Ingles had the assists. Johnson is now the only SU player with more than one goal this season.
The Orangemen have now scored three goals in back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 15 and Oct. 17, 1999 versus Providence and Boston College.
Freshman goalkeeper David Rabazzi (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) made a career-high eight saves in the first half alone. Rabazzi was replaced at the half by senior Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) who made five saves in the second stanza to earn the win. It was Peters' first career victory. Steve Elliot made five saves in the loss for Adelphi.
The Orangemen will look to make it three consecutive wins on Friday, Sept. 14 when they take on Pennsylvania in the first game of the Old Dominion Stihl Soccer Classic. SU will also play the host Monarchs on Sunday, Sept. 16.
