NORFOLK, Va. - A hat trick by Old Dominion's Attila Vendegh, including the game-winning goal in overtime, led the Monarchs to a 3-2 victory versus the Syracuse men's soccer team on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Orangemen are now 2-2 on the season, while ODU improved to 1-3.
Syracuse took the lead in the 33rd minute on a goal by senior Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area). It was the Orangemen's lone shot of the first half. Torok now has two goals for the season. Sophomore Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) and senior John Andrade (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) had the assists.
Vendegh's first goal in the 43rd minute knotted the game just before overtime. Syracuse took its second lead of the contest on freshman Jarett Park's (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) second goal of the season. Park scored on a direct kick from Andrade.
Vendegh again tied the game to force overtime. He then converted a breakaway in the 100th minute to end the game. He now has seven goals in 2001.
Senior Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) played the entire game in goal for the Orangemen, making a career-best six saves. Chad Calderone made one save for the Monarchs in the victory.
