
Johnson's Hat Trick Leads SU Past Providence, 5-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson's (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) first career hat trick led the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 5-0 win versus BIG EAST rival Providence on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Soccer Stadium at Lampe Athletics Complex. The Orangemen are now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league competition, while the Friars drop to 0-5 and 0-2 in the conference.
Johnson's hat trick is the first for an SU player since Gabriel Gervais in 1999. Gervais also tallied three goals versus Providence in a 3-2 overtime victory on Oct. 15, 1999. it was the 19th hat trick in the history of SU soccer. Johnson now leads the team with five goals and 12 points.
Senior co-captain John Andrade (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) tallied two assists on the day versus his hometown team. Andrade has six points this season and is second on the squad with four assists.
Junior Darren Ingles (Overisje, Belgium) put the Orangemen on the board first with his first goal of the season and first since 1999. Andrade and freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) were credited with the assists. Park has now scored at least one point in all five of his collegiate games.
Johnson took over the game from there, netting SU's next three scores in the 24th minute, the 48th minute and the 75th minute. Andrade, junior Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and senior Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) assisted on Johnson's goals.
Junior Ryan Hall (Great Falls, Va./Herndon) scored his second goal of the season with 20 seconds left in the game to set the final score.
Freshman goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) earned his first career shutout in his first collegiate start. Scheer made three saves as the Orangemen defense limited the Friars to six shots on the afternoon. Providence goalkeeper Danny Glynn made six saves in the loss.
The five goals was the most for the Orangemen in a BIG EAST game since a 5-4 overtime victory versus Georgetown on Oct. 18, 1998. SU's next match will be Saturday, Sept. 29 at home versus Virginia Tech. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
