Senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, PA/Downingtown) redirected a feed from freshman forward Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, PA/Tulpehocken) to break a 1-1 tie against Rutgers with 28:25 remaining in the second half. It turned out to be the game-winning goal as the Orangewomen defeated the Scarlet Knights, 2-1, in the BIG EAST opener for both teams at Coyne Field.
Rutgers (1-4, 0-1) tallied the contest's first goal at the 6:27 mark of the first half. Kamilah Lalani shoved in a rebound from the left post. Andschana Mendes took the initial shot on a penalty corner and had it saved by SU junior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus). Lalani was in perfect position for the follow-up shot.
Syracuse (3-2, 1-0) registered its first first-half goal of the season with just 1:18 remaining in the period. Sophomore forward Emily Smith (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) notched her first goal of the season with a shot from the middle of the circle that deflected off a Rutgers defender's leg and into the cage.
Aronowicz's goal, the game-winner, marked her second of the season and 26th of her career.
Latsko totalled six saves in the game, including five in the first half. RU's Stacey Gaenzle finished with four saves.
The Orangewomen entertain West Chester on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Coyne Field beginning at 1 p.m.
