SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team will play its first home game in 17 days when it hosts BIG EAST rival Providence on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. The Orangemen are 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the league, while the Friars are 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The 17 days between home games is the longest for SU since the 1998 season when the Orangemen defeated St. Bonaventure on Sept. 23 and lost to St. John’s on Oct. 11.
The Syracuse offense is led by a pair of underclassmen. Freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) leads the team with eight points on two goals and four assists. Park was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Sept. 10 for his performances versus Colgate and Adelphi. Sophomore Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa.), last year’s leading scorer, is second with six points on two goals and two assists.
Forward Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) has returned to the lineup after missing the 2000 season with a knee injury. The fifth-year senior has shown no singes of rust with two goals and an assist in his first four games back. Also returning the field after missing last season is junior Darren Ingles (Overisje, Belgium). Ingles has two assists on the season.
The Orangemen have played three goalkeepers already this season, the most since 1997. Senior Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) leads the trio with a 1.87 goals against average in more than 144 minutes of play. Freshman David Rabazzi (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) has made a team-high 14 saves in over 182 minutes of action. Rookie Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) has two saves in 45 minutes.
Syracuse leads the all-time series with the Friars, 12-6, including the last three meetings. SU won last year’s contest, 2-0.
