
Two Orangemen Soccer Players Receive BIG EAST Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson(Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) and freshman goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) have been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Johnson led the Orangemen to a 5-0 victory versus Providence on Saturday, Sept. 22 with his first career hat trick. It was the 19th three-goal game in the history of SU soccer and the first since Gabriel Gervais scored three times versus the Friars on Oct. 15, 1999. Johnson also had an assist in the Orange's loss at Old Dominion on Sept. 15.
Johnson leads the team with five goals and 12 points. He is tied for the league lead in goals scored both in overall play and BIG EAST games. He is second in the conference with 12 points overall and eight points in BIG EAST games.
Scheer is the second consecutive Orangemen to be named Rookie of the Week, following Jarett Park's selection on Sept. 10. Scheer picked up his first collegiate victory and shutout in his first start versus Providence. He made three saves in the first complete-game shutout by an Orangemen goalkeeper this season. He is currently tied for seventh in the league with a 1.33 goals against average in BIG EAST competition.
Syracuse is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST play. The Orangemen continue a stretch of eight conference games in nine outings on Saturday, Sept. 29 when they host Virginia Tech. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
