
Orangemen Soccer Set To Host Virginia Tech

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team will try and win its second straight BIG EAST match when it hosts the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m.
The Orangemen enter Saturday's play with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-1 league mark. The Hokies are 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST.
Syracuse is coming off a 5-0 win versus Providence on Sept. 22. Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) tallied his first career hat trick in the victory. He was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for his effort. Johnson is tied for 14th in the nation with a 1.0 goals per game average.
Freshman goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) also earned conference honors. He was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for his shutout victory versus Providence. Scheer made three saves in his first collegiate win.
The Orangemen lead the conference in scoring with 14 goals. Freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) is second on the team with nine points, and is currently tied for fourth in the nation with a 1.0 assist per game average. Senior midfielder John Andrade (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) is also among the nation's assist leaders. He is tied for 18th in the country with a 0.80 average.
The Hokies are led by Fred Silva, the conference's leading scorer. Silva has 16 points (five goals, six assists) in six games. He ranks 10th in the nation with 2.67 points per game.
Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools. This is Virginia Tech's first season in the BIG EAST.
