SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team will make their first home appearance of the 2001 season when it hosts regional rival Colgate on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Soccer Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Orangemen are 0-1 on the season after losing at BIG EAST foe Boston College, 5-1, on Friday, Aug. 31. Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) tallied SU's lone goal in the contest. Rookie forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) was credited with the assist for his first collegiate point.
Johnson now has 10 career goals and 23 points in just 20 games as an Orangemen. He ranks first among active players in both categories. Johnson has scored Syracuse's last five goals, dating back to October 20 of last season.
The Orangemen used a pair of goalkeepers in the season opener. Freshman David Rabazzi (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) started the game, making three saves in the firsthalf. Classmate Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) took over between the posts in the second half, recording two saves.
Colgate enters Wednesday's matchup with a 1-1 record. Colgate defeated Stetson, 3-0, and lost to the University of Central Florida, 4-0, at the UCF Soccer Classic last weekend. Tim Gerges, Zach Stuppy and Jimmy Ventriglia all scored for the Red Raiders. Stuppy also added an assist.
Will Martin has played 150 minutes in goal, making three saves. Jon Brunell has also seen time at goalkeeper and has not allowed a goal in 30 minutes of play.
The Red Raiders lead the all-time series between the schools, 27-20-8. Colgate has won the last three meetings, including a 3-2 overtime victory last season.
