A one-yard touchdown run by Chris Davis staked the Orangemen to its first lead of the season as the Orangemen lead the UCF Golden Knights, 7-3, at the end of the first quarter.
Davis' run capped an 11-play, 78-yard drive on the Orangemen's first possession. The Orangemen converted two third-down opportunities, including a 41-yard pass from quarterback Troy Nunes to sophomore wideout Johnnie Morant. Nunes took a hit as he threw and lofted the ball down the right sideline. Morant beat the UCF coverage and was forced out of bounds at the Golden Knight's 12-yard line.
A third-down completion to Maurice Jackson gave SU a first-and-goal at the one-yard line. Davis then plunged into the endzone for the score on his first rush of the season.
The Knights' offense came back with a 12-play, 78-yard drive of its own. UCF drove the ball to the Orangemen's five-yard line, but once again the Syracuse defense stiffened with its back to the wall and forced a 22-yard field goal by UCF's Javier Beorlegui.
Nunes' first quarter numbers included 15 rush yards on three attempts. He was 4-for-5 passing for 51 yards. Diamond Ferri recorded 25 rushing yards on four carries, while James Mungro had 22 yards on five carries.
