
Shumpert Leads Orange Past Mountaineers, 75-69

MORGANTOWN, WV- Senior forward Preston Shumpert scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half to lead #12/8 to its sixth straight win, a 75-69 triumph at West Virginia.
The win at the Coliseum was SU's first since an 87-77 overtime victory on Feb. 15, 1997. The Orangemen extended their record to 15-2 and 4-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Mountaineers slipped to 7-7 and 0-3 in the conference.
With West Virginia ahead, 48-44, in the second half, Shumpert hit consecutive three-pointers to help SU take a permanent lead, 50-48. Syracuse went on to score seven more unanswered points to construct its largest advantage of the game, 57-48. SU's 16-of-21 shooting from the free throw line in the second half helped seal the win for the Orangemen.
Syracuse led 28-23 with 4:32 left in the first half before West Virginia tied the game at 28 after a basket by Jonathan Hargett and a Lionel Armstead three pointer. The Orangemen took the lead again, 31-28, with a dunk by Hakim Warrick and a free throw by Craig Forth but Drew Schifino tied the game at 31 for the fifth time of the half with a three-point basket with one second remaining on the clock.
Hargett and Chris Moss led the Mountaineers with 17 points each.
In addition to his 21 points, Shumpert recorded his second double-double of the campaign with a season-high 11 rebounds. DeShaun Williams and Kueth Duany joined Shumpert in double figures with 18 and 17
