
Syracuse Wins Seventh Straight, Beats Irish, 56-51

SYRACUSE, NY - A 19-point effort by junior Kueth Duany and 13 second-half points by senior Preston Shumpert were enough to hold off a late Notre Dame rally in a 56-51 Orangemen win on Monday night in the Carrier Dome.
With its seventh straight win, #8/#7 Syracuse extended its record to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Fighting Irish slipped to 12-4 and 2-2 in BIG EAST play.
With Syracuse ahead by one, 39-38, Shumpert ignited a 13-1 run with seven points of his own to give the Orangemen their largest lead of the game, 52-39. Notre Dame responded with a 12-2 stretch, including six points by Ryan Humphrey to come within three, 54-51, with 36 seconds left in the game. Junior DeShaun Williams made two free throws and the Fighting Irish were unable to convert on their last possessions as Syracuse sealed the victory.
Humphrey recorded a double-double with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Thomas posted eight points and dished out nine assists for the Irish.
Duany, who tallied 15 of his points in the first half, pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Shumpert finished with 15 points and Williams joined him in double figures with 10 points. Williams also tied a season-high with nine assists.
Syracuse held its opponent below 42 percent shooting for the 16th time in 18 games this season. The Orangemen limited the Irish to .349 from the field and .208 on three-point attempts.
Syracuse takes to the road next for a non-conference game at Tennesse on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m.
