"We are very excited that Steve made the decision to stay here at Syracuse," said Orange head coach Paul Pasqualoni of Dunlap, who was offered the defensive coordinator position at Clemson recently. "He has been an outstanding addition to our program."
Dunlap's 2001 linebacking corp included the team's second-leading tackler in All-BIG EAST linebacker Clifton Smith, who posted 94 stops. Dunlap's coaching also yielded the emergence of outside linebackers Charles Burton, Jameel Dumas and Rich Scanlon. Under the tutelage of Dunlap, Burton moved from strong safety in 2000 to starting outside linebacker spot for 2001. Dumas and Scanlon split time as starters, with Dumas registering 67 tackles and Scanlon recording 60 stops.
The former West Virginia defensive coordinator spent 17 years as an assistant under legendary Mountaineer coach Don Nehlen, including nine as the program's defensive coordinator (1991-2000). During that time span he worked specifically with the inside linebackers (1984-86, 1993-2000) and defensive backs (1987-92).
