Villanova defeated Syracuse, 2-1, in two sets of penalty strokes in BIG EAST field hockey action. In what has heated up into one of the fiercest rivalries in the league, this year's match marked the sixth-straight one-goal decision between the two teams. Five of the last six meetings have been settled in overtime. It was the first time the Orangewomen have come out on the losing end to Villanova since 1992.
Neither team scored in the first half. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead at 43:59 when Christina Lugones netted her fifth goal of the season off a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by Kristen Strocen and Sarah Francis.
Syracuse tied the game at 61:26 with a penalty corner of its own. Senior back Missy Grosman (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) found the back of the cage for the second time this season. Junior midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg) and sophomore back Lindsay Kocher (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) earned assists on the play.
The two teams played through two 15-minute overtime sessions without a sudden-death goal being tallied. The score was still tied following one round of strokes. Villanova finally got an edge in the second round of strokes. Kelly Driscoll slipped a shot past SU goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa.) at 99:09.
Latsko faced 22 Villanova shots and recorded 15 saves. Syracuse managed just six shots for the entire contest. Meghan Helwig totalled four saves for Villanova.
Both Syracuse and Villanova are 7-6 on the season. The Orangewomen drop to 1-2 in conference play and are now fourth behind Boston College, Connecticut and Villanova (2-1).
