SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) scored the Orangemen's only goal to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie versus third-ranked St. John's on Saturday, October 19 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orangemen are now 7-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the BI G EAST, while the Red Storm is 10-1-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the league.
Park's goal came in the 84th minute. With the Orangemen trailing, 1-0, senior Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) came away with a loose ball in the box and found Park who beat St. John's keeper Bill Gaudette for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Park and Cristofori have now teamed up on SU's last two goals and three of the Orangemen's last four scores.
St. John's took the early 1-0 lead in just the second minute of the game. Chris Corcoran beat the Syracuse defense to the left corner and crossed the ball to the right side of the box where Andre Schmid finished the play. SU goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) made six saves rest of the way, holding the Red Storm scoreless for the final 108:03.
Syracuse outshot the Red Storm, 20-11, including several scoring chances late in the game and in overtime. Gaudette, who entered the game with the nation's best goals against average at 0.33, made six saves, including several diving stops.
The tie runs the Orangemen's unbeaten string to four games (2-0-2) and snapped a five-game losing streak versus the Red Storm. Syracuse is 5-1-1 at home this season, and is now 1-0-1 versus ranked teams in 2002.
Syracuse plays its third consecutive ranked team on Wednesday, October 23 when it hosts 15th-ranked Boston College at 4 p.m. in the SU Soccer Stadium. It is the Orangemen's final home game of the season.
