
Women's Soccer Loses In OT At Virginia Tech, 2-1

BLACKSBURG, Va.- Syracuse junior Anne-Marie Lapalme's (Granby, Quebec) goal in the opening minute of the second half was not enough, as the women's soccer team lost to Virginia Tech in overtime, 2-1, at Moseley Field on Sunday afternoon. The Orangewomen are now 2-10-2 overall and 0-5-1 in BIG EAST play. The Hokies improved to 5-8-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the BIG EAST.
Lapalme opened the game's scoring 46 seconds after intermission with a shot to the near post from 20 yards out to give SU a 1-0 lead.
Virginia Tech's Kathy Holdsworth headed in a cross from Emily Barnhart at 85:13 to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team was able to score in the remaining 4:47 of regulation and the game moved to overtime.
Although Syracuse was able to get off two shots in overtime, it was the Hokies who capitalized on their only scoring chance of the extra period. Holdsworth netted the golden goal at 95:45, giving the Hokies its first victory against the Orangewomen.
SU freshman keeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) made three saves in the game. Natasha Dirda made two saves in net for the Hokies.
Lapalme is tied with sophomore Stephanie Sybert (Baltimore, Md.) for the team lead with four goals.
It was the fifth straight loss for Syracuse, the longest in program history.
The Orangewomen will complete their three-game road trip with visits to Notre Dame and Pittsburgh this weekend. SU faces the Fighting Irish at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 and plays the Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27.
