Freshman Laura Puddle (Thames, England) of the University of Connecticut field hockey team scored the game winning goal in overtime to lead the Huskies past BIG EAST foe Syracuse, 2-1, at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the win, the Huskies clinch a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament and at least a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. UConn moves to 10-7 overall, and with only one BIG EAST game left, are unbeaten at 4-0 in the BIG EAST, while Syracuse falls to 10-8 and 2-3 in the league.
Syracuse got on the scoreboard first when Brittany Carriero (Setauket, NY) hit an eight-yard shot past UConn goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) at 22:30 and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. It was Carriero's third goal of the season and sixth of her career.
The Huskies answered at 54:18 when freshman Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ) redirected a shot from Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) to even the score at one apiece. Syracuse had several scoring chances in the last minute of play during a scramble in front of the UConn goal, however, Butler cleared the ball setting up the overtime.
Just two minutes into sudden death overtime, junior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) fed the ball into the circle and Puddle knocked it in for the win.
Connecticut outshot Syracuse, 10-6, on the afternoon and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. Butler made two saves for the win, while Syracuse goalie Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, PA)stopped four UConn shots. The Orangewomen have two regular-season games remaining. They will be at William & Mary on Nov. 1, and at Richmond on Nov. 3.
