Heather Yanusas scored two goals (her fourth and fifth goals of the season) to propel the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 3-1 victory against No. 19-ranked Syracuse. The Crusaders improved to 4-6 overall.
Holy Cross struck early, just 4:03 into the contest. Senior Liz Tutella capitalized on a pass from Jillian LeClair to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. The count remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half as Syracuse was limited to just one shot on goal during the first 35 minutes.
Yanusas gave Holy Cross a 2-0 lead at the 38:29 mark of the second half. It turned out to be the game-winning goal. She found the back of the net a second time at the 50:12 mark, converting a feed from Cathleen Kerman.
Sophomore forward Leah McKay (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) accounted for the Orangewomen's lone tally with 3:51 left in the game. It was McKay's first career goal.
HC goalkeeper Jennifer Corsilli was forced to make only one save on the day. Syracuse goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) totaled seven saves.
The Orangewomen are 6-5 overall, 1-1 in The BIG EAST Conference. They will play at Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 8, beginning at 7 p.m.
