The Orangemen and Orangewomen cruised past the competition at the Thomas Murphy Invitational on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, held at Loyola College. The Orangewomen, led by junior captain Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central H.S.), swept Johns Hopkins (266 - 58), Loyola (273 - 60) and St. Peter's College (281 - 29). The Orangemen, behind junior captain Spencer Raymond's (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School) strong performances, posted three victories against Johns Hopkins (219 - 111), Loyola (255 - 80) and St. Peter's (281 - 17).
McDonough, who is undefeated in dual-meet action so far this season, added six more first-place finishes this weekend. She was faster than the BIG EAST "A" qualifying standards in the 100 butterfly (57.98), 200 IM (2:08.67), 400 IM (4:30.67) and the 200 butterfly (2:05.08). She helped SU's 200 freestyle relay and its 200 medley relay to first-place finishes against the relays from Hopkins, Loyola and St. Peter's.
The Orangewomen's 800 freestyle relay made up of first-year swimmers Kristi Westrich (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson H.S.), Kathryn Gold (New Carrollton, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt H.S.), Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and sophomore Lisa Fong (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) set a Loyola pool record with their first-place time of 7:54.20.
Raymond won five events for the Orangemen. He was first in the 100 breaststroke (58.39), the 200 breaststroke (2:10.95), the 50 freestyle (21.63), the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.85) and the 200 medley relay (1:35.17). His time in the 100 breaststroke assures him of a spot at the BIG EAST Championship in February.
The SU divers did their part to contribute to the wins. Freshman Erin Cofiell (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury H.S.) was first on both boards. She posted scores of 230.55 points on the one-meter and 431.62 on the three-meter. Rookies Dewey Schultz (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional H.S.) and Tony Campagna (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool H.S.) earned their first collegiate victories. Schultz claimed gold on the three-meter with 470.43 points. Campagna was first on the one-meter with a score of 267.15.
Other notable performances for the Orangewomen included sophomore Rachel Wrede (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney H.S.) winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke races. She swam the 100 back in a time of 59.41 and the 200 back in 2:08.83. Those times will send her to the BIG EAST Championship for the second consecutive year.
Wittich and fellow freshmen Christina Jansen (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos H.S.) each turned in strong showings. Jansen was first in the 100 freestyle (54.04), the 50 freestyle (25.04) and as part of the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. She was second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 breaststroke. Wittich claimed first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:56.77), the 1,650 freestyle (17:33.31) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.89). Her time in the mile was faster than the BIG EAST "A" qualifying mark.
Junior Kalei Mahi (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.), the school's record holder in the women's 100 breaststroke, was first in that event with a BIG EAST-qualifying time of of 1:07.30. She also won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:24.49.
On the men's side, sophomores Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock H.S.) and Gustavo Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden/?sterportskolan) each won events. Anstrom was first in the 100 freestyle (47.56), while Kertzscher was first in the 100 backstroke (52.74).
Freshman Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep School) qualified for February's BIG EAST Conference Championship meet with his first-place time of 1:52.71 in the men's 200 backstroke. He also helped SU's 200 medley relay team qualify for the conference meet with their time of 1:35.17. Raymond, Kertzscher and Anstrom swam with Schelling as part of the Orangemen's first-place 200 medley relay team at Loyola.
