The Syracuse University women's swimming and diving team improved its dual-meet record this season to 6-0 following a 131-106 victory against West Virginia at the WVU Natatorium on Saturday. The Orangemen lost a 133.5 - 109.5 decision to the Mountaineers. The SU men are 4-2 this season in dual-meet action.
Junior Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) won three events for the Orangewomen. She took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:07.45), the 200 butterfly (2:04.79) and the 400 medley relay (3:58.53). Her times in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly beat BIG EAST qualifying marks, but she had already achieved the conference times during the first semester.
Classmate Kalei Mahi (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame) was first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.51. Sophomore Rachel Wrede (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) captured first place in the 200 backstroke (2:07.78) and as part of the 400 medley relay. Freshman Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) earned valuable points for the Orangewomen in the distance events. She won the 500 freestyle (5:09.96) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:31.59).
On the men's side, SU was strong in the 200 backstroke, sweeping the top three finishes, led by freshman Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep School) who was first with a time of 1:54.08 (BIG EAST "A" cut). Classmate Rob Persico (Fulton, Md./DeMatha Catholic) stopped the clock at 1:56.29 for second place, while sophomore Gustavo Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden/Österportskolan) was third with his time of 1:57.07.
Schelling teamed up with junior Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School), sophomore Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) and freshman Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academy) to win the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:29.57.
SU divers controlled the men's one-meter board. Freshman Tony Campagna (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) posted a score of 308.10 to win the event, while teammates Ricky Rodriguez (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) and Dewey Schultz (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) finished second and third respectively with scores of 290.62 and 287.40. Schultz was first on the men's three-meter board with a score of 301.25.
Syracuse returns home to the Ted Webster Pool on Saturday, Jan. 25, when it hosts Connecticut. Diving will begin at 9 a.m., while swimming gets underway at noon.
