The Orangemen finished eighth out of nine teams, while the Orangewomen finished 10th out of 10 teams at the 2002 Nike Cup Championship held from Nov. 21-23, at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel men's and women's swimming and diving teams each won team titles. The UNC women's team finished with a total of 959 points, 385.5 points ahead of second place Virginia Tech. The UNC men's team accumulated 757 points, 44 points more than the No. 9-ranked Tennessee team.
SU had three individuals notch top-four finishes. On the first night of competition, junior Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was fourth in the women's 200-yard individual medley (2:04.20). She hit an NCAA "B" qualifying time in that event and in the 200 butterfly on Saturday night when she finished ninth with a time of 2:02.52.
Junior Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singpore American School) was Syracuse's lone medalist at the Nike Cup. The men's co-captain captured third place Friday night in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.97.
On Saturday night, sophomore Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif./Clayton Valley) posted a fourth-place finish in the finals of the men's 200-yard backstroke. He swam the finals race in a time of 1:51.87.
The SU swimming and diving team now faces a long hiatus from competition. The team will continue training, but will not be in action again until January 18, at West Virginia.
